The short answer

The Helikon-Tex UTS 8.5-inch shorts are tough polycotton ripstop shorts with ten pockets, a hook-and-loop waist adjuster and wide belt loops. They suit everyday carry, travel and outdoor work if you want organized pockets without the look of bulky cargo shorts. The trade-offs are weight, a slightly technical look up close and fabric details that vary between versions, so check the label of the variant you buy.

On this page

The Helikon-Tex UTS, short for Urban Tactical Shorts, are 8.5-inch polycotton ripstop shorts with ten pockets, a hook-and-loop waist adjuster and wide belt loops. This Helikon-Tex UTS shorts review explains which fabric versions exist, what each pocket is designed for, how to read Helikon's size chart, how low-profile the "grey man" urban look really is, and how to set the shorts up for everyday carry. When you search, use the exact name, UTS 8.5, because Helikon also sells the UTS in other lengths and fabrics.

Our editor Ivan bought a pair in 2019 with his own money. His personal notes on them are being collected and will appear in a separate box on this page. Until then, this review is based on the current listing, Helikon-Tex's own product pages and comparison table, a retailer's reproduction of Helikon's size chart, and general knowledge of workwear fabrics.

The short answer: if you want shorts that carry a lot without looking like bulky cargo shorts, the UTS is a strong mid-range option. If you want the lightest, plainest summer shorts, this is more garment than you need.

Which UTS fabric? PolyCotton Ripstop vs Stretch Ripstop

Helikon has offered the UTS in several fabrics over the years, and this is where buyers most often get confused.

  • The listing variant. The Amazon listing for this ASIN gives 60% cotton, 37% polyester and 3% elastane for the variant shown.
  • PolyCotton Stretch Ripstop. Helikon's own product page and comparison table list the 8.5-inch Stretch Ripstop version as 50% polyester, 48% cotton and 2% elastane, with a fabric weight of 220 g/m2 (about 6.5 oz/yd2) and a total weight of 393 g (13.9 oz) for a size L.
  • PolyCotton Ripstop. Helikon's comparison table gives 60% cotton, 37% polyester and 3% elastane for the 6-inch UTS in PolyCotton Ripstop, and several European retailers list the same blend for some 8.5-inch colors.
  • Older versions. Some retailers still describe the 8.5-inch UTS as a 50/50 polycotton ripstop with no elastane mentioned, which likely reflects earlier production.

We could not confirm from Helikon which colors use which fabric today, and listings get revised over time. The practical advice is simple: read the composition on the specific color and size you are buying, and on the label when the shorts arrive.

What the blend means in practice

Ripstop is a weave with thicker reinforcing threads at regular intervals, creating a faint grid. If the fabric gets a small cut or puncture, the grid helps stop the tear from running. It is the same idea used in military uniforms and outdoor pants.

Polycotton blends trade off two fibers. Cotton is soft, breathable and comfortable against the skin but absorbs water and dries slowly. Polyester is stronger, more abrasion resistant and quick to dry but feels less natural. A cotton-heavy blend such as 60/37 leans toward comfort; a polyester-heavy blend such as 50/48 leans toward durability and faster drying.

Elastane at 2 to 3% adds just enough stretch to make crouching, climbing and getting in and out of a car easier. It is not enough to make the shorts feel like athletic wear.

Helikon's comparison table places the 8.5-inch Stretch Ripstop version in its "warm" category, 66 to 104°F (19 to 40°C). At around 14 oz (400 g), these are heavier than gym or hiking shorts; compare that with the ultralight fabric in our Under Armour Vanish Woven Pants review and the difference in purpose is obvious.

The ten-pocket layout, explained

The pocket layout is the main reason to buy the UTS over ordinary shorts. Here is each pocket as described on the listing and Helikon's pages:

PocketCountDesigned for
Front pockets with reinforced edges2Clip-on knife, flashlight or multitool; everyday items like keys
Wide rear pockets2Wallet, notebook, gloves
Slim inner rear pockets2Cards, a pen, flat items you want separated
Zippered thigh cargo pockets2Secure carry: wallet, passport, phone, larger EDC items
Hook-and-loop flap pockets on the thighs2Quick access: phone, small pouch, cord or lip balm

A few points worth understanding before you buy:

  • Reinforced front edges. Pocket clips wear through the edge of normal shorts over time. Reinforcement spreads that wear and keeps the opening from fraying.
  • Thigh pockets with two kinds of closure. Helikon says the zippered thigh pockets can hold an AR magazine or larger EDC accessories. The smaller flap pockets on their outer side suit a phone. Zippers are more secure; hook-and-loop is faster but noisier.
  • Low-profile cargo. The thigh pockets are integrated into the leg rather than built as large bellows boxes, which is a big part of the urban look.
  • Weight distribution matters. Heavy items in the thigh pockets swing as you walk. Keep heavy things near the hip and use the thigh pockets for flat or light items.

Waist, belt loops and fit details

Hook-and-loop waist adjustment

Instead of a button, the UTS closes with a zip fly and a hook-and-loop panel at the waist. Helikon says the adjustment range is up to 6 cm (2.4 in). A retailer listing also describes an elastic panel in the middle of the back. Together, these let the waist flex a little when you sit or crouch and let you cinch the shorts without a belt.

The trade-off is that hook-and-loop wears over time, collects lint and can snag other garments in the wash. It also makes a ripping sound when opened, which some people dislike.

Belt loops and D-ring loops

Helikon's product page says the wide belt loops accept belts up to about 2 in (50 mm). Another Helikon description quotes 45 mm (about 1.75 in) for a military belt, so plan on a belt in the 1.5 to 1.75 in (38 to 45 mm) range if you want a comfortable fit, which covers most stiff EDC and gun belts. Helikon also notes that two of the loops have extra loops for a D-ring or carabiner, handy for keys or a lanyard.

Construction details

Retailer listings reproduce Helikon's description of double-layer reinforcement at the seat and YKK zippers. Helikon's blog also mentions dummy cord loops for tethering small items. These are the details that separate purpose-built tactical shorts from fashion cargo shorts.

Helikon-Tex UTS sizing: waist and length

Helikon sizes its full-length pants by a letter size plus a leg length such as Regular or Long. For the 8.5-inch UTS, the inseam is fixed, and the chart we found lists letter sizes only. The figures below come from a Scandinavian retailer that reproduces Helikon's chart. They are garment measurements, not body measurements.

SizeWaist relaxed, cm (in)Waist stretched, cm (in)Total length, cm (in)
S80 (31.5)88 (34.6)50 (19.7)
M85 (33.5)93 (36.6)50.5 (19.9)
L90 (35.4)98 (38.6)51 (20.1)
XL95 (37.4)103 (40.6)51.5 (20.3)
XXL100 (39.4)108 (42.5)52 (20.5)

Some listings also offer larger sizes that this chart does not cover. To choose well:

  1. Find a pair of shorts that fits you well, ideally non-stretch shorts that sit where you like them.
  2. Lay them flat and measure straight across the waistband, then double the figure to get the circumference.
  3. Compare with the relaxed waist in the chart. The stretched figure tells you how much give the waistband has.
  4. If you fall between sizes, the larger one is usually safer. The hook-and-loop adjuster can take the waist in, and the chart's stretched figure is the most give the waistband offers, so a waist that fits only at full stretch is likely to feel tight, especially when you sit or carry gear. A retailer that reproduces the chart also suggests sizing up when unsure.
  5. Think about carry. A loaded EDC belt and a full set of pockets make shorts feel tighter. If you plan to carry a lot, a little room helps.

The grey man look: how low-profile are the UTS?

"Grey man" is a term from the tactical and preparedness world for dressing so you blend into a crowd rather than advertising that you carry gear. Helikon groups the UTS with its urban, low-profile EDC clothing, and its blog describes the UTS range as spanning sporty to fully tactical styles.

On paper, the UTS does a good job of looking like ordinary shorts from a distance:

  • No camo by default. Helikon offers plain colors such as black, khaki, olive, coyote and several greys, alongside camo patterns. For a grey man look, a neutral color is the obvious choice.
  • Integrated pockets. The thigh pockets sit flatter than traditional bellows cargo pockets, and there is no webbing or MOLLE.
  • A familiar cut. The silhouette reads like a casual chino or work short rather than a uniform.

Up close, there are still tells: zippered thigh pockets, wide belt loops, D-ring loops and the hook-and-loop waist tab. Helikon's own Greyman Shorts, in a DuraCanvas fabric with nine pockets, are the brand's more discreet option. For many people the UTS is a reasonable middle ground. Pair them with a plain tee, such as the HUGO ribbed T-shirt in a neutral color, and simple shoes, and the outfit reads as everyday summer wear.

Setting up the UTS for everyday carry (EDC)

Here is a practical way to organize the pockets, based on the layout rather than on personal use:

  1. Clip-on tool in a front pocket. Use the reinforced edge for a clip knife, flashlight or multitool. Knife laws vary widely: in the US they differ by state and city, including blade length and carry rules, and in Canada the federal Criminal Code sets the main rules, so check the rules where you live and travel before carrying a knife.
  2. Phone in a thigh flap pocket or front pocket. The flap pocket gives quick access; the front pocket keeps weight closer to the hip.
  3. Wallet in a rear pocket or zippered thigh pocket. A slim wallet, like the one in our slim bifold wallet review, sits flatter. On travel days, the zippered thigh pocket is the more secure home.
  4. Keys on the D-ring loop or in the opposite front pocket. Keep them away from the phone screen.
  5. Small flat items in the inner rear pockets. Cards, a pen, a folded mask or a small notebook.
  6. Belt for heavier loads. If you carry a lot, a stiff EDC belt through the wide loops spreads the weight better than the hook-and-loop alone.

For travel, a chained wallet such as the Pacsafe RFIDsafe Z50 can hook to a belt loop and ride in a zippered pocket, which pairs well with these shorts.

Care and maintenance

Helikon's care instructions for the UTS are clear: wash at 86°F (30°C) or below, do not bleach, do not tumble dry, do not dry clean and iron at no more than 230°F (110°C). Some practical additions:

  • Close the hook-and-loop before washing. Open hook-and-loop grabs other clothing, especially thin synthetics like training pants and tanks, and fills with lint.
  • Zip the zippers and empty every pocket. Ten pockets mean ten places to forget a receipt or a pen.
  • Wash inside out with similar colors. Cotton-rich blends can fade, especially black and dark greens.
  • Air dry. Skipping the dryer keeps the size stable and protects the elastane.
  • Clean the hook-and-loop. A stiff toothbrush removes lint and keeps the closure gripping.
  • Check stress points. Belt loops, pocket corners and the seat take the most strain. Small repairs early keep them going.

UTS vs Helikon's Greyman Shorts

The Greyman Shorts are the closest alternative within Helikon's range. Helikon's comparison table lists them at 326 g against 393 g for the UTS 8.5-inch Stretch Ripstop, with nine pockets instead of ten and a DuraCanvas fabric that can be waxed for extra resistance to rain and dirt. Choose the Greyman for a quieter look; choose the UTS for maximum pocket organization.

UTS vs other tactical brands

5.11 Tactical and Vertx are the best-known alternatives in North America. 5.11 tends toward a more obviously tactical look, while Vertx focuses on low-profile urban clothing. Fabrics, pocket counts and fits vary from model to model, so compare the exact models you are considering. The UTS's strengths on paper are its pocket count, the hook-and-loop waist and Helikon's fabric choices.

UTS vs ordinary cargo shorts

Regular cargo or chino shorts are lighter, cheaper and easier to wear casually. They lack reinforced clip edges, zippered thigh pockets and wide belt loops. If you carry little, they are the better choice.

Who should buy the Helikon-Tex UTS shorts

  • EDC carriers. If you carry a tool, flashlight or knife every day, reinforced pockets and wide loops are the point.
  • Travelers. Zippered thigh pockets keep a passport or wallet secure in crowds.
  • Outdoor and practical users. Yard work, range days, camping and short day hikes all reward tough fabric and lots of pockets.
  • People who want tactical function without camo. Neutral colors and integrated pockets keep the look civilian.

Who should skip them

  • Minimalists. If you carry a phone and keys, ten pockets is overkill.
  • People who want very light shorts. For the gym or long hot hikes, lighter synthetic shorts make more sense.
  • Hook-and-loop haters. The waist closure is central to the design.
  • Anyone who needs a knee-length short. Choose the 11-inch UTS instead of the 8.5-inch.
  • Buyers who want a fully discreet look. The Greyman Shorts or plain chinos hide the tactical details better.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Do not overload the thigh pockets. Heavy items swing and pull the shorts down. Keep weight near the hip.
  • Choose a muted color for a grey man look. Black, khaki, grey and olive blend in; camo does not.
  • Confirm the fabric before ordering. Composition varies by version and color. Read the listing for the exact variant.
  • Pick the right belt width. A belt that is too wide will not fit the loops comfortably; one that is too narrow lets the shorts shift.
  • Keep hook-and-loop away from delicate laundry. Wash the shorts with similar heavy items or close every tab.
  • Break in stiff fabric. New polycotton can feel stiff; a few cold washes usually soften it.

Final verdict

The Helikon-Tex UTS 8.5-inch shorts are a practical, well-thought-out pair of urban tactical shorts. On paper, the strengths are clear: a sensible ten-pocket layout with reinforced clip edges and zippered thigh pockets, a hook-and-loop waist that adjusts without a button, wide belt loops for EDC belts and a ripstop polycotton fabric that should handle rough use. In a neutral color, the design should read as ordinary shorts from a distance.

The trade-offs are weight, a few visible technical details and the fact that the fabric blend changes between versions and colors, so the label matters. If you carry tools, travel often or want shorts that work as hard as you do, they are a strong mid-range option. If you just need light summer shorts, they are more than you need. Ivan bought this pair in 2019; his own notes will appear here when they are ready. Browse the rest of our everyday and training picks on the Style & Gym Wear hub.

Frequently asked questions

Are Helikon-Tex UTS shorts true to size?

Helikon's chart gives garment measurements, not body sizes. For size M, it lists a waist of about 85 cm (33.5 in) relaxed and 93 cm (36.6 in) stretched. Measure a pair of shorts that fits you well, compare, and remember that the hook-and-loop adjuster can take the waist in, and the stretched figure is the most give the waistband offers.

What is the difference between UTS PolyCotton Ripstop and PolyCotton Stretch Ripstop?

Both are cotton and polyester ripstop blends with some elastane. The current listing variant is 60% cotton, 37% polyester and 3% elastane, while Helikon lists its Stretch Ripstop version as 50% polyester, 48% cotton and 2% elastane. More cotton feels softer; more polyester dries faster.

How many pockets do Helikon UTS shorts have?

Ten: two front pockets with reinforced edges for clips, two wide rear pockets, two slim pockets inside the rear ones, two zippered thigh pockets and two smaller hook-and-loop flap pockets on the thighs. Helikon says the thigh pockets can take an AR magazine or larger EDC items.

Are Helikon UTS shorts good for everyday carry?

On paper, yes. Reinforced front pocket edges suit clip knives or flashlights, the zippered thigh pockets secure a wallet or passport, and the belt loops take wide EDC belts. Check the knife rules where you live and travel before carrying one: in the US they vary by state and city, and in Canada federal law sets the main rules.

How long are Helikon UTS 8.5 shorts?

The 8.5 refers to the inseam, about 22 cm, which usually ends above the knee. Helikon also makes the UTS in 6-inch and 11-inch versions, so pick the 11-inch if you want shorts that reach closer to the knee.

How do I wash Helikon-Tex UTS shorts?

Helikon's care instructions say wash at 86°F (30°C) or below, do not bleach, do not tumble dry, do not dry clean and iron at no more than 230°F (110°C). Close the hook-and-loop and zippers and empty the pockets before washing to protect them and other clothes.

Should you buy the Helikon-Tex UTS Urban Tactical Shorts?

Best for: Everyday carry with a clip knife, flashlight or multitool; travel days where zippered pockets matter. Check the current price and availability on Amazon.
